1. Casio FX-991EX ClassWiz

I immediately fell in love with this calculator. For me , a visual learner this was perfect. It has a significantly improved display resolution in comparison to its previous model (4 timed higher than the model ESmodel) which enabled Casio to develop a much more appealing menu experience. It also can do 4x4 matrices. This is a step up from the old 3x3 found in the earlier model.

I love that it can draw graphic representations of integrals and differentials. - again, this really helps me as a learner.

I think that this spreadsheet feature is the best of none in the scientific calculator range.

Why This Calculator:

  • Rapid:Really quick processing speed.
  • Very Visual:As I am a visual person I am awestruck that this calculator has clear visual menus, spreadsheet functions and graphical representations for integrals, derivatives, etc.
  • QR Code to generate graphs:It's a clever idea to be able to scan a QR code on your smart phone and generate graphs with this calculator (it means you can use it as a graphing tool at an extended time). But, I think there are some issues with this. First even if you have a smart phone with you then why don't you just use a website to generate the graph in the first place? Second, if you are planning to create graphs regularly in class, you really should get yourself a graphing calculator!
  • affordable:I really do think you're getting value here. The idea that you'd get an inexpensive calculator for $10 when you can get this wonderful scientific calculator for not all that much is simply absurd.

Keep In Mind:

  • The shortcut for no engineering symbolOne thing that really bothers to me in this Casio is the fact that you need to enter the menu every time you're looking to create an engineering sign.
  • Wipes memory when turned off':It bothers me that if I turn it off, all memory of recent calculations is erased.

2. Sharp EL-W516TBSL 16-Digit Advanced

The variety of functions available on this calculator makes it an extremely useful piece of equipment. It would be great for students who know they will be doing numerous calculations, but hasn't decided on their major as of yet, because you can use it in many different classes.

Why This Calculator:

  • Intuitive Playback:I prefer the playback option where you can make edits to errors you've made in your calculation without having start all over again.
  • Big 4 Line DisplayThe displays on this device are without doubt the top in Sharp's Sharp EL range of calculators.
  • Multiple Functions:You can cover just all the functions you can think of on this calculator, making it useful for many (nearly all) non-graphing calculations that you'd like to accomplish.

Keep In Mind:

A very popular calculator that is one of the go-to items in college classes. You'll never be far away from your fellow student or professor who understands how to navigate this device, which is great to speed up learning. It's also typically approved for the majority of exams, so this calculator should see you through high school and possibly your college degree. This is a reliable, familiar tool in no time.

Ideal to teach Geometry, Physics, Statistics, Calculus, Algebra and Engineering.

  • Secure Bet:Professors typically limit the use of calculators during their tests to one or two select groups of calculators. This is most likelyone of the most frequently used models you'll see on the exam certified calculator list.
  • SAT, ACT, AP, FE/PE Exam Approved*:It's used in several standard tests (at when you write). I'd suggest looking up your test's current instructions in case this changes.
  • Fantastic DisplayI am in love with the fact that this display shows calculations just like you would see the same on paper, which makes it much more intuitive to understand and read.

Keep In Mind:

  • It's slowI've observed that it's substantially slower than the Casio FX-991EX.

4. HP 35s Scientific Calculator

There are some truly really hardcore rusted on HP fans out there. One of the main reasons for this is the sturdy feel and the logical design of HP calculators. (Note Personally, I'm more of a Texas Instruments person, but I'm a fan of HP designs).

  • Logical LayoutI feel the buttons are logically placed here, making it simple to find the math you require once you've had some practice.

5. Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView

It's the official calculation tool of the GED examinations and I'd suggest those students who are preparing for the GEDs get this immediately.

If you're not a mathematician, this is a good basic calculator that can be used for all-purpose high school math. If you're studying engineering, calculus, physics or computer science, I'd advise stepping up to the TI-36X Pro reviewed above. I also think this calculator lacks the features to see you through to college, so I would recommend this model for high school students.

Ideal to teach Statistics, Algebra, General Math, Geometry and Biology.

Why This Calculator:

  • GED Certification:This is the only GED certified calculator that you can use during the GED test. It's basically forcing you to purchase this. It's an easy accessible, simple to use accurate calculator. It's allowed to use it for the e Social Studies, Science and Section 2 of the Mathematical Reasoning tests.
  • Affordable:It's really cheap for the price of a scientific calculator. However, keep in mind that it will help you master the basic stuff, but nothing much more. You'll outgrow it in college.

Keep In Mind:

  • You'll grow out of it:In college Physics and Engineering courses you'll find you require a calculator that has greater calculation options, like that of the TI-36X Pro.

6. Casio Fx-115ES PLUS

This is a decent entry-level calculator, but I'm struggling to justify using it as the Casio fx-991EX model is so much more efficient at a similar price.

  • A great DMS button Its degree symbol and minutes (DMS) symbol is really simple to access via a single button. As a user of the TI 36x pro which requires you to dig in the menus for this function, I was pleasantly surprised to find the simple DMS button really refreshing.

Keep In Mind:

  • Slow:I've seen that this is considerably slower than Casio fx-991EX.
  • DisplayThe display also represents a quite a leap down from the Casio fx-991EX.
  • Price:It's at a very affordable price point compared to the Casio fx-991EX, too. Are you able to see the difference? It's just not as good as its bigger brother!

My Rating: 5/10

It's a fantastic basic calculator for middle or high school student. It will perform the basics calculations that will help through the general maths classes in highschool. However, when it comes time to focusing on geometric, financial, or calculus the one you're looking at won't make the cut unfortunately.

The most impressive draw card of this one, however, is its price point. I'd love to get it for my Grade 7 son because it's a great option for the time being and won't cost me anything.

Best used for general math in high school.

Why This Calculator:

  • Amazingly cheap:It's just about the cheapest calculator you can buy. It's perfect for kids who won't use it very well or otherwise.
  • Good Button SpacingBecause there aren't many buttons, they're very well spaced out and feel like there's plenty of space to type.

Keep In Mind:

  • Simple:This will be the kind of tool you'll get if you want to save money ... however, you'll get a basic calculator. If you're studying mathematics or sciences there's no need for this one.
  • Don't Expect it to last:Many online reviews have complaints that it was broken soon after. Make this a consideration when you are making your purchase.
